A Lot Of Fireplaces
The Carll house included fireplaces in many rooms, as was usual in homes built before central heating and conditioning were available. Many of them, like this marble fireplace in a sitting room, is still in excellent shape. On a cold winter night, the fireplace would have provided a warm welcome to the individual who sat in this nook, reading a book or speaking with companions. This is probably a pretty realistic representation of how the room looked in Carll’s day, if not for the wallpaper peeling from the walls.

History All Around
“This particular house stood to me out because of the history that was just lying around everywhere,” Sansivero explains. Every room offered a new gem to be found, such as this blue-and-white China set that is still in excellent condition. A tea kettle and an oil-burning lamp are among the various antiquities in this kitchen scene. This room’s ceiling has deteriorated and is already falling in, threatening to collapse totally.
