It might sound like an easy task to stay in shape through the fall, but it’s something that’s easier said than done. The cooler weather tends to keep you (and everyone else) inside, heavy and delicious foods are in season and eaten on all the holidays, and for the most part, working out isn’t at the top of everyone’s list. Instead of just giving up and convincing yourself it’s a losing battle, take steps towards your fitness goals, and don’t lose sight of what you want. It’s difficult, yes, but it’s possible. In fact, we’ve gathered some ways you can make sure you don’t fall off the wagon this autumn.
Prioritize
It’s easy to feel like you don’t have time to work out. Especially in the fall months leading up to the holidays. The key to this is making exercise a priority that’s just as important as any other daily task you may have. Each and every day, you probably do things to maintain your health, like brushing your teeth, washing your hands, and making sure to eat your veggies and some fruits. Physical activity should be part of that list as well. Make it part of your daily routine, and soon enough, it will become a habit. Of course, you don’t have to work out for a full hour every day – even a 30-minute brisk walk will do.
Be Realistic
There is a chance staying fit will be more challenging in the fall and winter months, and that’s okay. Don’t expect perfection. Too high expectations can actually set you up for failure and make you feel inadequate. Learn to accept that some days you might not achieve all your fitness and health goals, and that’s okay. It doesn’t mean you’ve lost all your progress. Simply pick up where you left off that day or the next. Don’t be so hard on yourself.
Limit Alcohol Intake
Aside from being high in calories, alcohol lacks nutrient value and lowers your inhibitions. As the holidays loom closer, make an effort to be more conscious of how much alcohol you’re drinking. It might be rather unrealistic to completely cut it out, but do your best to limit it.
Eat In-Season
Take advantage of the season! There are so many delicious fruits and veggies that will now be available to you that weren’t in the summer. Naturally, nutrition is a huge part of staying fit, so find out what fruits and veggies are in season and try them out! Aside from saving money, you’ll be getting valuable vitamins and minerals when the fruits and veggies are at their peak.
Make The Most Of Downtime
On days that the weather simply doesn’t allow exercising outside, don’t worry, you can still work out! Find a good home workout! There are so many videos and plans online – for free – that you can follow. Not to mention, plenty of them require no equipment at all, so you don’t have to run out and buy anything.
Yard Work
If you happen to have a yard, then you have a great opportunity for burning off some extra calories! Engaging in fall-related chores, like raking leaves, trimming hedges, and mowing the lawn can help burn calories. Of course, there’s the added bonus of your yard looking great afterward!
Sleep
In the midst of all the holiday parties, work, and everything else going on in the fall, it’s easy to lose some sleep. However, it’s more important than ever that you get enough sleep! When you don’t sleep well or enough, you’re less likely to make healthy eating choices and have the energy to exercise. It can really tip the scale when it comes to fitness.
